Spirit Box

Channelling the sinister and tumultuous soul of Victorian Gothic, Spirit Box is a paranormal psychodrama about a haunted YA author and the spirit medium intent on dragging his ghosts into reality.

It’s a thrilling, chilling two-hander exploring loneliness, the meaning of ghosts and the ways in which stories can keep us imprisoned or set us free. Identity doubling, unprocessed grief, and blurred lines between fiction and reality all coalesce around a live exorcism where hidden family secrets resurface and you never know quite who is telling the truth.

The protagonist frequently switches between two characters, one ‘normal’, the other aberrant, and the story gradually reveals how his own writing had provided him with a vehicle through which to transform his identity — until it all falls apart.

Drawing heavily from Gothic horror tropes and the eerily spiritual poetry of Emily Dickinson, the piece combines a tense haunted atmosphere with strong dramatic drive, making people question what they’re seeing while giving them a real thrill-ride through a twisted hall of mirrors.
