Spirit Box

Channelling the sinister and tumultuous soul of Victorian Gothic, Spirit Box is a paranormal psychodrama about identity, isolation and ghosts.

The highly sensitive and recently bereaved Master Redlaw has returned to his family home, where sinister shadows and strangely behaving birds prompt him to reach out to the sharp-tongued and wilful YouTube ghost hunter, Dara Faulks. Sensing an opportunity to reconnect with the spirit plane, she installs herself in the house and begins to take over the narrative, revealing motives of her own to reach out to the other side. Possessions, doppelgängers and spectral visitations ensue, and the two characters find themselves drawn towards a strange box, one which will unlock the key to Redlaw’s troubled family past, and crack open the very foundations upon which his story unfolds.

The play opens up a space to confront what it means for someone to get trapped inside, be that in the physical quarters of a house, or their own projected desire. It explores the danger of containing that which should be allowed to pass on, touching on themes of paranoia, possession, deception, fear and dreams. Dara’s YouTube videos serve as a guiding voice through our age of digital projection, making use of ASMR and her online avatar to explore the many ways that storytelling brings us together and sets us free.
